NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-266 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 1 Date August 10, 1987 Completed By C. W.

Krause Telephone 414/221-2001 Unit 1 operated at approximately 495'MWe net throughout the period with no trips and one maintenance-related outage.

On July 18, 1987, the unit was taken off line for 8.2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
for a scheduled maintenance outage.

The purpose of the outage was to repair a leaky root valve on the lower level tap for steam generator level transmitter LT-472.

There were no other significant load reductions during the period.

On July 2, 1987, one of the two fuses in the "A" reactor trip breaker closing circuit blew after closing the breaker during testing.

A similar event had occurred for the other fuse on June 30 during protection system logic testing.

Because the fuses blew only after the closing coil was actuated and not after the shunt trip device was actuated, the reactor trip breakers were operable.

An inspection of the breakers was conducted in an effort to determine the cause of the blown fuses.

Minimal tolerances between stationary and moving parts of the closing housing were noted.

It was also noted that the closing coil stationary housing becomes slightly distorted when its mounting bolts are tightened.

The close tolerances and housing distortion problems were corrected by Maintenance and the breakers have been tested satisfactorily.

There was no other major safety-related maintenance performed during the period.

LER 84-006-00 was issued during the period.

The LER documents a Type B test failure that occurred on September 24, 1984 on the containment purge supply penetration.

Documentation of the failure was discovered during preparation of the report for the April 1987, Type A integrated leak rate test.

No other LERs were issued during the period.
