l-MEMORANDUM TO:
Chairman Jackson Commissioner McGaffigan FROM:
Nils J. Diaz
./
. t
SUBJECT:
ATOMIC SAFETY AND LICENSING BOARD PANEL The Commission has taken several steps recently toward enhancement of the NRC's adjudicatory processes. As we move toward increased a: countability in all areas of the agency, it would seem appropriate to schedule a public briefing of the Commission in which the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel (ASLBP)is invited to present a general status report on the work of the ASLBP in recent years, including summaries of
- such matters as the types of cases, numbers of cases opened and closed, length of proceedings by type and procedural form, and trends in these areas. I believe it should be of benefit to ' the Commission and the public if the ASLBP also discussed current generic issues relating to the performance of the ASLBP in recent years and further opportunities for improving the efficiency of our administrative / adjudication processes.
The meeting I propose. would enable the' Commission.to engage in a collegial dialogue with the ASLBP on these important matters. I recommend and request that such a meeting take place in the next ninety days.
