Chicago, Illinois 60690 0767 December 10, 1987 Mr. Thomas E. Murley, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Quad Cities Station Units 1 and 2

" Appendix R Clarification Request on Fuse pulling and Replacement" NRC Docket Nos. 50-254 and 50-265 Reference (a): Letter from I.M. Johnson to T.E. Murley dated September 30, 1987

Dear Mr. Murley:

In Reference (a), it was stated that for fires in Fire Areas TB-II, fuse replacement could be required to start the swing diesel generator.

This statement should also have included Fire Area TB-I.

Though TB-I was inadvertently left out of the exemption request, the fuse replacement was incorporated into the station's Appendix R safe shutdown procedures, the operators are trained in this operation, and the number of fuses being replaced for a fire in Fire Area TB-I is not burdensome.

The purpose of this letter is to provide clarification regarding Appendix R exemption request 10.1.

This request was provided to your staff for their review and approval via Reference (a),

please direct any questions you may have regarding this matter to j

this office.

Very truly yours, I. M. Jo n
