Dear Mr. Wadley:
On July 24,1998, the NRC completed an inspection at your Prairie Island Nuclear Generating
Plant. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
)
Aroas examined during the inspection included the Process Control Program, the processing
- and storage of solid radioactive waste, the shipment and disposal of radioactive material, and
your study conducted to determine the neutron dose rate beyond the berm of the Independent
)
Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI). Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a
selective examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and interviews
. with personnel. No cited violations of NRC requirements were identified.
Overall, the programs to classify, process, quantify, and transport both radioactive material and
waste were wellimplemented. In addition, the studies conducted by your staff to determine the
neutron dose rates outside the berm of the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation were
appropriate and concluded that the direct radiation dose to members of the pubMc was well
below the NRC limits.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790'of the NRC's_" Rules and Practice," a copy of this letter and its
. enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
