SAFETY EVALUATION FOR LIMERICK GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2, AND PEACH BOTTOM ATOMIC POWER STATION, UNITS 2 AND 3, RELATED TO THE LICENSEE'S RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 95-02 (TAC NOS. M93870, M93871, M93874, AND M93875)
Dear Mr. Edwards:
By letter dated November 16,1995, PECO Energy Company (the licensee) submitted its response to NRC Bulletin 95-02, " Unexpected Clogging of a Residual Heat Removal (RHR)
Pump Strainer While Operating in Suppression Pool Cooling Mode," for Limerick Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, and Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Units 2 and 3. By letters dated
_ May 9,1996, and March 4,1997, the staff forwarded two requests for additional information (RAl)
'a the licensee. The licensee's responses to the RAls were provided in letters dated Jurie 10, 1996, and April 3,1997. The enclosure provides the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff's safety evaluation of the licensee's responses to NRC Bulletin 95-02.
In its rebponses to the bulletin, the licensee agreed to comply with all of the requested actions except Requested Action Num6?r 2. This requested action asked licensees to conduct a test and strainer Irispection to verify ope ability of pumps which draw suct!on from the suppression pool when pedorming their safety function. The purpose of the requested test and inspection is to verify that the pumps are operable and that the suppression pool is adequately clean.
