ENCLOSURE I. Program Area Design certification review of the General Electric Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) design. DRSP is responsible for the coordination of this review.

II. Objectives Currently the staff has under review an application by General Electric for design certification of the ABWR. The same design is presently undergoing licensing in Japan with plans to construct two units in the early 1990's. Meetings with the Japanese to better understand the ABWR design should facilitate the NRC's design certification review.

III. General Approach for Achieving Objective A cooperative agreement presently exists between the US and Japanese regulatory groups that encourages a discussion of mutual licensing and review policies and problems. The staff plans to meet with the entities directly involved in the Japanese ABWR design and licensing process. By these meetings the NRC staff hopes to gain a better understanding of the General Electric ABWR design.

IV. FY 87-88 Activities The staff plans to visit Tokyo the week of February 1, 1988 to meet with ANRE/MITI, Tokyo Electric Power Co., and Toshiba and Hitachi. The steff also plans to visit NUPEC's Katsuta and Isogo Engineering Laboratories.
