SUBJECT:

3DSTRESS - R&D MAGAZlNE'S 100 AWARD WINNER

Dear Dr. Patrick:

I want to congratulate you and the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses (CNWRA) staff regarding the selection of 3DSTRESS as one of the year's 100 most technologically significant products. This honor, conferred by R&D Magazine, is a very prestigious one in the research and development industry. It is to your credit that the award-winning software has already been deemed usefulin fields other than the high-level radioactive waste program for which it was developed. The individuals who were the key developers of 3DSTRESS, David Ferrill, Alan Morris, and Brent Henderson, also are to be congratulated.

Further, I am pleased to hear that 3DSTRESS is being usefully applied to evaluate site conditions at the proposed U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) high-level waste repository at

. Yucca Mountain. Moreover, the demonstrations of the software that your staff conducted in San Antonio for staff from DOE and affected units of local government and the fact that the code is f

available to them should facilitate communication and understanding of the technicalissues i

being evaluated.

Recognition of a CNWRA achievement as meeting very high industry standards for its promising utility in widespread applications is a distinction that gives your sponsor great satisfaction. On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, I wish you continued success in your support of NRC activities.

Sincerely, hd Shirley Ann Jackson nj cc: D. Ferrill, CNWRA hU A. Morris, CNWRA y'
