CONCERNING THE F-423 SHIPPING PACKAGE Attendees:
N_R.C MDS Nordion Bernard White Blair Menna Dave Tiktinsky Ron McGregor Ross Chappell Mike Krzaniak Li Yang Nancy Osgood Wayne Hodges Introduction A meeting was held at the request of MDS Nordion, at Rockville, Maryland on June 23, 1998, concerning a possible requece for a Certificate of Compliance for the Model No.
F-423 package. The F-423 package will be an overpack to contain a Gammacell 220 irradiator.
Discussion 1.
Nordion discussed the design of the overpack. The overpack will be made of severallayers of polyurethane foam contained in stainless steel shells. The foam cushions and insulates the irradiator during the free drops and fire test under hypothetical accident conditions.
2.
D scussion centered on the performance of the package during hypothetical accident conditions and the orientation for drop testing. Several orientations were discussed along with the possible effects on the package.
3.
Nordion indicated that the drop testing is scheduled to be performed in August 1998. Nordion expects to submit a safety analysis report to the NRC by the end of the calendar year.
