Subject:

Boston Edison Company's Response to Generic Letter (GL) 98-01, " Year 2000 Readiness of Computer Systems at Nuclear Power Plants" This letter is Boston Edison Company's response to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's request (dated May 11,1998) for information regarding Year 2000 readiness at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. Generic Letter 98-01 requires two responses. The first response is required by August 7,1998, and the second response by July 1,1999. This letter satifies requirement No.1.

Requirement One:

"Within 90 days of the date of this generic letter, subrnit a written response indicating whether or not you have pursued and are continuing to pursue a Y2K program such as, or similar to, that outlined in NEl/NUSMG 97-07, augmented appropriately in the areas of risk management, contingency planning, and remediation of embedded systems. If your program significantly differs from the NEl/NUSMG guidance, present a brief description of the programs that have already been completed, are being conducted, or are planned to ensure Y2K readiness of the computer systems at your facility (ies). This response must i

address the program's scope, assessment process, plans for corrective actions (including I ()

I testing and schedules), OA measures, contingency plans, and regu!atory compliance."

l Response One:

O Pilgrim has pursued and is continuing to pursue a year 2000 readiness program similar to O

O l

that outlined in NEl/NUSMG 97-07, Nuclear Utility Year 2000 Readiness. The program l

addresses potential year 2000 problems that impact safety-related and other systems required by nuclear power plant license or NRC regulations. The scope of the facility program includes identifying and, where appropriate, remediating embedded systems. The program provides for risk management efforts and the development of contingency plans prior to critical dates.
