S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Protection Program Washington, DC 20555 Revision 2 ,

Dear Sir / Madam:

Re: University of Florida Training Reactor (UFTR)  ;

Facility License R-56; Docket No. 50-83 i The attached document is an updated Revision 2 to the University of Florida Training Reactor Respiratory Protection Program reflecting changes necessitated by the updated University of Florida Respiratory Protection Program along with recommendations from NRC Information Notices 97-66 and 98-20 to ensure emergency response readiness. As noted in the Program, the UFTR, to the extent practical, shall utilize process or engineering controls to control the concentrations of radioactive material in the air to preclude the need for respiratory protection.

When it is not practical to apply process or other engineering controls to control the concentrations of radioactive material in air to values below those that define an airborne radioactivity area, the UFTR shall, consistent with maintaining the total effective dose equivalent ALARA, increase monitoring and limit intakes by one or more of the following means: 1) control of access, 2) limitation of exposure times, 3) use of respiratory protection equipment,4) other controls.

As noted, respirators are not routinely used at the UFTR; however, the intention is to allow il their nonroutine use during periods of extraordinary maintenance such as unstacking the core ]g for component repair or replacement when it may be determined that there is a concentration /

of radionuclides in the air. In such a case, evaluation of this concentration may determine that the use of respirators is either required or recommended to provide an additional level of 40 protection for workers. ho n

It is to address such a situation for which we are planning to implement Revision 2 ef the Respiratory Protection Program to allow an additional level of protection for workers.

If further information is needed, please let me know.
