The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by OIE staff as of 12:N. on the date of this notification.

U. S. Army subject! IMPORT OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL VIA NEW YORK CITY Region I was informed by a N.Y. ERDA office (HASL) that a U. S. Government radioactive shipment of demineralized resin from Balboa, Canal Zone, had arrived at 39th Street Pier, Brook 1vn, N. Y. ON 11/18. The shipment is destined for CHEM Nuclear Systems, Bowell, South Carolina via Home Transport Company truck. The shipping container u marked as Type B, Ciass III.
A military courier accompanied the shipment.
The shipment was initially delayed due to unidentifierl Cuatoms problems, i
Customs matters were arranged by the Military Transportation Management i2= %
Command, Bayonne, N.J.
While the Military Command was arranging Customs clearance, the New York City Department of Health informed the Military Command g
that the pending shipment was in violation of New York City regulations.
The shipment has been held up by the City of New York until routes of travel and a police escort can be arranged.
The shipment is expected to move today, 11/19/75.
Media interest is expected because of involvement by NYC Department of Health.
The State of New York has been informed. A press release is not planned.
OIE received original notification of this occurrence by telephone from New York ERDA Health & Safety Lab at 2:30 p.m., November 18, 1975.
