SUBJECT:

YEAR 2000 READINESS OF THE REACTOR VESSEL INTEGRITY DATABASE

Dear Mr. Bustamante de la Mora,

I received your letter dated July 7,1998 requesting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) position on the year 2000 (Y2K) readiness of the reactor vessel integrity database (RVID). As indicated in your letter, the Almaraz nuclear power plant (NPP) is in the process addressing the requirements of Generic Letter 98-01, " Year 2000 Readiness of Computer Systems at Nuclear Power Plants."

The following response addresses issues outlined in Appendix D of NEl/NUSMG, (Vendor Readiness Questionnaire):

The new version of the RVID has been reprogrammed using Microsoft Access

  • software, an is Y2K compliant. Specifically, the portions of the database that contain date information use a 4-digit year as opposed to a 2-digit year. Licensee's of U.S. commercial NPPs are currently providing the Materials and Chemical Engineering Branch (EMCB) with updates to the data included in the RVID. The EMCB staff is reviewing these submittals, and the RVID will be updated accordingly. The new version is expected to be released in the first quarter of 1999.

The database will continue to be provided free of charge. It should be noted that the functionality of the old FoxPro version and the new Access version of the RVID does not on dates (i.e. dates are for information and do not play a major role in processing).
