This letter provides the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation (WCNOC) 90-day response to the Naclear Regulatory Commission request for information regarding Year 2000 (Y2K) readiness at nuclear power plants.

Generic Letter 98-01 requires two responses.

The 90-day response is required by August 10, 1998, and the second response is required by July 1, 1999.

Requirement One of Generic Letter 98-01:

"Within 90 days of the date of this generic letter, submit a written response indicating whether c not you have pursued and are continuing to pursue a Y2K program such as, ot similar to, that outlined in NEI/NUSMG 97-07, augmented appropriately in ti e areas of risk management, contingency planning, and remediation of embece 3d systems.

If your program significantly differs from the NEI/NUSMG guidant present a brief description of the programs that have already been completed, are being conducted, or are planned to ensure Y2K readiness of the computer systems at your facility (ies).

This response must address the program's scope, assessment process, plans for corrective actions (including testing and schedules),

QA measures, contingency plans, and regulatory compliance."

WCNOC's Response to Requirement One of Generic Letter 98-01:

f WCNOC has pursued and is continuing to pursue a Y2K readiness program similar jl to that outlined in NEI/NUSMG 97-07 " Nuclear Utility Year 2000 Readiness."

i The WCNOC program addresses potential year 2000 problems that impact safety-related systems and other systems required by the Wolf Creek Generating Station Operating License NPF-42 and NRC regulations.

The WCNOC program includes identifying and, where appropriate, remediating embedded systems.

The WCNOC program provides for risk management efforts and the development of O

contingency plans prior to critical dates.

"Upon completing your Y2K program or, in any event, no 1.

i 1999, submit a written response confirming that your facility is Y2K ready, or l

will be Y2K ready, by the year 2000 with regard to compliance with the terms l

and conditions of your license (s) and NRC regulations.

If your program is incomplete as of that date, your response must contain a status report, including completion schedules, of work remaining to be done to confirm your facility is/will be Y2K ready by the year 2000,"

WCNOC's Interim Response to Requirement Two of Generic Letter 98-01:

WCNOC will submit the required response to Requirement Two of Generic Letter 98-01 by July 1, 1999.
