In Generic Letter (GL) 98-01, " Year 2000 Readiness of Computer Systems at Nuclear Power Plants," the NRC requests licensees provide information regarding Year 2000 (Y2K) readiness at nuclear power plants. GL 98-01 requires the following of each addressee:

1. Within 90 days of the date of the GL, submit a written response indicating whether or not the utility has pursued and is continuing to pursue a Y2K program such as or similar to, that outlined in NEl/NUSMG 97-07, augmented appropriately in the areas of risk management, contingency planning, and remediation of embedded systems; and
2. Upon completing the Y2K program or no later than July 1,1999, submit a written response confirming that the facility is Y2K ready, or will be Y2K ready, by the year 2000 with regard to compliance with the terms and conditions of the operating license and NRC regulations.

Nuclear One (ANO), Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS), River Bend Station (RBS), and l

. Waterford 3 Steam Electric Station (W3). Each Entergy site is pursuing a Y2K readiness program that follows the guidance provided in NEl/NUSMG 97-07, Nuclear Utility Year 2000 Readiness. Each program is designed to remediate potential Y2K problems that impact safety-related systems and other systems required by each plant's operating license or NRC regulations. The scope of the facility programs includes documentation for identifying, testing,

and remediating embedded systems and application software for plant assets that support safe plant operation. The programs address risk management efforts and contingency plans prior to critical dates.

Concerning Required Response #2, Entergy will submit a :<ritten response confirming our facilities' Y2K readiness by the year 2000 regarding compliance with the terms and conditions of each plant's operating license and NRC regulations no later than July 1,1999. If a plant's program is incomplete at the time of the response, Entergy will submit a status report including completion schedule (s) of remaining work to be completed to confirm Y2K readiness.
