Letter Dated 10/02/87 from J. A. Calvo, NRC, to B. D. Withers, WCN00
Subject:
. Docket No. 50-482: Corrective Measures for Piping Erosion Gentlemen:
The purpose of this letter is to provide the information requested in the Reference relative to corrective measures for erosion.
In addition, this letter documents the number of eroded piping areas replaced with stainless steel components during the 1987 refueling outage.
As discussed with Mr.
Paul O'Connor and other members of your staff in a meetind on November 17,
- 1987, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation has completed the ultrasonic and/or visual inspections of safety related piping areas identified as having high potential for erosion.
The inspections covered more than 125 safety related piping areas and included the areas downstream of'the throttled butterfly valves.
As a result of these examinations,-
only four areas were found to be eroded and these areas have been replaced with stainless steel. The four eroded areas replaced were
- Reducer downstream of EP V090 (Essential Service Water System)
- Reducer downstream of EP V058 (Essential Service Water System)
- Area downstream of EP HV 47 (Essential Service Water System)
- Area downstream of EP HV 48 (Essential Service Water System) 8712070001 hhB2 PDR ADOCK PDR G

Page 2 of 2 ET 87-0362 November 30, 1987 Three other areas that were scheduled for replacement with stainless steel during the 1987 refueling outage were visually inspected when plant conditions' allowed and were~ found not to require repair / replacement.
These three areas were
- Area downstream of EJ V033 (Component Cooling Water System)
Area near EA V025 (Service Water System - Non-Safety Related)
Area near EA V005 (Service Water System - Non-Safety Related)#
- Note: This area did not need repair / replacement.- However, since it was " cut out" before visual examination, WCN00 elected to replace it with stainless steel.
Although VON 00 has replaced the eroded areas with stainless steel' which should significantly reduce the erosion, modifications are planned to minimize or eliminate the erosion potential for these as well as other i
areas.
These modifications are intended to increase back pressure in the system which should significantly reduce the potential for erosion downstream of throttled butterfly valves and other piping geometries.
The planned modifications may include piping configuration changes for which the combination of existing flow orifices, throttled butterfly valves and elevation changes have contributed to the four areas of ercolon.
Finally the current. plans include the addition of pressure and flow instrumentation to further monitor the Essential Service Vater System during operation.
The modifications discussed above are scheduled for implemente. tion during Refuel' IV (Spring 1990).
Our erosion / corrosion monitoring program is ongoing and if additional information becomes available that indicates a need to change the plan discussed above, we will notify you of the changes.
If you have any questions concerning this matter please contact me or Mr.
O. L. Maynard of my staff.
Very truly yours, O
