NRC STAFF REVIEW OF THE NEW ATTACK SUBMARINE CLASS SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT

Dear Admiral Bowman:

I am responding to your letter of May 11,1998, concerning review by the staff of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of the New Attack Submarine (NSSN) class safety analysis report (SAR). In your letter, you gave a brief description of the NSSN reactor plant, along with an NSSN SAR review plan that outlined areas to be covered in the SAR and a proposed schedule for the review.

The NRC should be able to support your schedule, however, we would like to meet with your staff in February 1999 to further discuss the scope and schedule for our review effort.

The review has been assigned Project No. 705, and the Non-Power Reactors and Decommissioning Project Directorate (PDND) will be the pomt of contact for the review.

Dr. Seymour H. Weiss is the Director of PDND and Alexander Adams is the project manager for the review. Dr. Weiss can be reached at 301-415-2170 and Mr. Adams at 301-415-1127.

NRC informed Naval Reactors in a letter dated February 16,1995, that future design reviews would be performed on a reimbursable basis. The details of reimbursement for this review need to be agreed on about 1 year before submission of the SAR to allow the staff to conduct planning for the review.

If you have any questions about our participation in the NSSN SAR review, please contact Dr. Weiss or Mr. Adams at the numbers listed above. We look forward to reviewing the SAR for this important addition to our Nation's defense.
