Dear Mr. Chairman:

Effective August 20,1998, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission willincrease the secondary retrospective premium from $75.5 million per reactor per incident that was effective August 20,1993, to $83.9 million. This invease reflects the aggregate percentage change (since August 1993) in the Consumer Price indax. Section 170t of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended, requires that this change be mede at least once every 5 years. The increased premium will be applicable to all large operating nuclear power reactors.
