Subject:

TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT IN INDIANA Chicago Operations Office notified IE:III that at approximately 5:15 p.m.

on August 13, 1975, a truck trailer containing SNM (4 kgs. U-235; 93%

enriched) overturned eight miles east of Shoals, Indiana on U. S.

Route 150. This was a double trailer shipment with the SNM in the second trailer.

Only the second trailer overturned. The, shipment of unirradiated fuel elements was en route to GE, Pleasanton,' Calif.,

The common carrier was Consolidated l

Freightway.

I Representatives of Indiana State Police and Indiana State Radiological Assistance Team were on the scene.

Truck seal had not been broken.

The truck door was opened and representatives looked in.

The decision was made to release truck and trailers for further transportation.

The occurrence co'uld generate local news coverage since the Governor of j

Indiana has indicated interest in the accident because the containers were not surveyed prior to leaving the scene. The Shipment is presently en route to California.

k ERDA RAT were not requested at the accident scene.

Region III received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Chicago Operations Office at 8:15 p.m. on August 13, 1975.
