TRANSPORTATION INCIDENT Region I was informed by New England Nuc) ear Company that a shipment of seven packages of radiopharmaceuticals (low millicurie amounts of sulfur-35, tritium, carbon-14, iodine-125 and chromium-51) had fallen off of a Shulman Airfreight truck while enroute to hospitals in Philadelphia. This occurred on the New York State Thruway in the Bronx, New York. The New York City 1

Office of Radiological Control was notified, responded to'the scene and directed the cleanup efforts. Packages were damaged and slight contamina-W tion to the roadway resulted. One package containing 10 millicuries of chromium-51 is unaccounted for at this time. The material is in a shielded

=

i container. The hazard involved with this package would be if an individual opened it and removed the vile from the container, at which time the individual would be exposed to 200 mr/hr at the finger and approximately 1 mr/hr.at the body. Ingesting of the material would expose the individual to approximately 3 rad total to the whole body. New England Nuclear and New York City are initiating a search for the package.

DOT, the State and City of New York, are being kept informed. A press release is not planned because news media covered the cleanup.

OIE received notification of this occurrence by telephone from New England Nuclear at 2:30 p.m., 8/15/75.
