Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)

Possession Only License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 PDMS Quarterly Report - 2"d Quarter of 1998

Dear Sirs:

The purpose of this letter is to provide the NRC a summary of the activities at TMI-2 during the 2"' quarter of 1998.

During the 2"' quader of 1998, GPU Nuclear co npleted the semi-annual surveillance of the TMI-2 Reactor Building on June 18,1998. No signif. cant adverse trends ofradiological conditions were identified during the inspection. One ano nalous contamination survey point will be reexamined during the next inspection. The next inspection of the TMI-2 Reactor Building is scheduled for December 1998.

Routine radiological surveys of the Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Buildings during the 2"dquarter of 1998 did not identify any significant adverse radiological trends.

The Reactor Vessel temperature monitoring system reported the Reactor Vessel temperatures ranged from 48.7 F on April 1,1998 to 70.7 F on June 30,1998. The Reactor Building

{

temperature ranged from 50.2 F on April 1,1998 to 74.1 F on June 30,1998. The largest j

temperature difference between the Reactor Building and the Reactor Vessel occurred on June 2, 3,4, and 5,1998, when the Reactor Building temperature was 4.0 F greater than the Reactor Vessel temperature.

.c 1920-98-20413 Page 2 of 2 Significant work activities during the 2"' quarter of 1998 included repair of some flood barrier penetrations which were found not sealed in accordance weh the PDMS Safety Analysis Report.

This condition was reported in LER 98-001 on July 2,1998. In addition, modifications were in progress to PDMS ventilation systems to eliminate paper chart recorders and obsolete flow transmitters. Also, roof patching was performed to minimize rain leakage into the plant.

Dismantlement of non-radiological equipment continued with the removal of inactive electrical circuits located in the Turbine Building.

Please contact Adam Miller of the TMI Nuclear Safety and Licensing Department at (717) 948-8128 if you have any questions regarding this report.
