October 24, 1975 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE --PN-75-111A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by OIE staf f as of 3:00 p.m. on the date of this notification. TRUCK CARRYING RADIOACTIVE WASTE LEAVES HIGHWAY IN WEST VIRGINIA This is an update of PN-75-111 dated October 23, 1975.

Each of the 14 drums stored in the cask contained between 200 and 700 millicuries of radioactive vaste material and read at the time of loading between 3 and 10 roentgen per hour.

Accident scene was roped off and cask was under guard during the night. A replacement truck was obtained and the cask reloaded without incident at 12:30 p.m. today and continued on route to Morehead, Kentucky.

The immediate area was surveyed after loading. No indication of radioactive contamination was detected.

It is reported that the two drivers were not seriously

Region II (Atlanta) ha2 dispatched an inspector to the crash scene to observe reload and make confirmed radiation surveys as appropriate.

The local newspaper in Morgantown gave headline importance to the accident.
