RELIEF REQUEST TO USE ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS (ALLOY 690 TYPE WELD METALS) IN THE FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION OF REPLACEMENT STEAM GENERATORS - JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. MA2051 AND MA2052)
Dear Mr. Morey:
By letter dated May 22,1998, Southem Nuclear Operating Company, Inc., submitted a request for relief to use American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)Section IX Code Cases 2142-1 and 2143-1 in the fabrication and installation of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2, replacement steam generators under the provisions of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Section 50.55a(a)(3).
The staff has completed its review of the relief request and has determined that the proposed alternative to employ the Alloy 690 type weld metals, which are the subject of the Code Cases, provides reasonable assurance of structural integrity. Therefore, the staff finds the proposed alternative may be authorized pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i). The basis for this conclusion is described in the staff's Safety Evaluation (enclosed).
If you have any questions regarding this response to your requests, please have your representative contact Jacob l.- Zimmerman at (301) 415-2426.
