. Report of High Radiation ~ Levels in California State Park l
An individual telephoned IE, Region V to report localized high radiation levels in a remote area of Mount Diablo State Park near Walnut Creek, California.
The individual said he and a friend wera hiking in the park, and using a military surplus radiation monitoring instrument.
They discovered a ground area about two feet by two feet which exhibited high dose rates. He said they dug down a short distance and found a round metal box. At this time, radiation dose rates were possibly 10 R/hr as described by the individual.
They covered the box, marked the spot and left. The individual agreed to lead a te'am to m
- the area, and left his name and telephone number.
An investigation team composed of II, ERDA and State of California
(
representatives was arranged. However, when attempts were made to call the individual back, the telephone number turned out to be a private residence in Santa Rosa, California, and the occupant knew nothing of the individual who called or of the reported situation.
All other efforts to locate the individual have been unsuccessful.
The State of Calif'ornia and the San Francisco Operations Office of ERDA were informed.
IE has made arrangements for the Aerial j
Radiological Measurement System (ARMS) aircraf t to make an aerial y
survey of the area, which can be reached only after a half mile hike from the end of a 4-wheel drive vehicle trail.
gj OIE (San Francisco) received initial notification of this situation M
by telephone on July 15, 1975, from a private individual.
No press D
release is to be made in advance of the aerial survey.
