INADVERTENT DISCHARGE OF LIQUID RADUASTE I Commonwealth Edison Company notified the Office of Inspection and i Enforcement, Region III, at about 4:00 p.m., on May 12, 1975, that I an unplanned release of radioactive liquids had occurred at Dresden 1.

l The release was apparently initiated between 2000 hours0.0231 days <br />0.556 hours <br />0.00331 weeks <br />7.61e-4 months <br /> on May 9, 1975, {

and 0800 hours0.00926 days <br />0.222 hours <br />0.00132 weeks <br />3.044e-4 months <br /> on May 10, 1975, by inadvertent starting of a, pump which transfers liquid radwaste from the Unit I resin vault to the radwaste gy. ;

- contractor's treatment facility. The pump apparently ran until the resin "

vault was emptied, overflowing the contractor's tank and finding its i l vay to the Unit 1 intake canal via a drainage ditch. The licensee did '

( not become aware of the event until the morning of May 12, 1975.

The licensee estimates a total discharge of 19,500 gallons at an activity level of 0.012 uCi/ml, or a total discharge of approximately 0.9 curies. The licensee also stated that the concentration did not exceed Techni' cal Specifications or 10CFR20 limits.

Inspectors have been dispatched to the site to evaluate the occurrence.
