Massachusetts Institute of Technology hereby requests amendment to SNM 986 to cover 2 mg of U-233 which is currently in our possession as a residue of research material. supplied directly to an MIT investigator by the Atomic Energy Commission ~under an AEC research grant more than 25 years ago.
Neither the Radiation Protection Office or the Radiation Protection Committee were aware of the presence of this material on campus until the laboratories of this investigator were cleared out after his death.
Mr. J. Roth, Region 1 Facility Inspector noted our inventory record of this material during a recent inspection and cited the Institute for not being liensed to possess this nuclide. We therefore desire licensure for storage only of this material until such time as we may arrange for the proper transfer or dispossi of this very small source.
This amendment is necessary to reestablish compliance with NRC regulations for this program.
