\\

)

Dear Mr. Murley:

1 The purpose of this letter is to inform you that portions of construction activities related to the Braidwood Unit 2 Fire Protection l

Program in Safety-Related areas, are not expected to be completed by the start of Fuel Loading of Unit 2.

This remaining construction work includes l

i structural steel fireproofing, penetration fire seals, and raceway fire wrap.

This letter details what work remains to be completed and the scheduled dates for this work to be completed.

It also describes the compensatory measures that will be maintained in place to assure adequate levels of fire safety 4

until this work is completed.

j The building areas, in which structural steel fireproofing work will j

remain outstanding at the time of Unit 2 Fuel Loading, are detailed in Attachment A.

Work has been delayed primarily to allow for the final installation of electrical cable pan / conduit hangers. These areas are all 1

I located within the Unit 2 Auxiliary Building, with the majority of this remaining fireproofing work being in the cable spreading rooms.

For each building area, the current completion status, as well as the currently scheduled completion dates are provided. This remaining fireproofing of

)

structural steel is scheduled to be completed by March 31, 1988.

l Penetration fire seal work has been expidited, however, as of December 10, 1987, forty-eight (48) penetration fire seals in the Auxiliary l

Building are expected to be incomplete. This status is due to the recent completion of cable pulling through the affected penetrations.

This has now I

l been completed and the penetrations have been released to the contractor for fire seal installation. These remaining seals are scheduled to be completed by January 1, 1988.

i T.E. Murley. November 25, 1987 Certain fire wrap on Unit 2 cable trays will also not be completed by the start of fue1~ loading. As of December 10, 1987, approximately 25% of the Unit 2 cable tray system requiring fire wrap will have fire wrap installed, with the remainder of this work scheduled for completion by February 29, 1987. Again delays in completion of cable tray work have delayed the completion of the fire wrap.

While these physical aspects of the Braidwood Unit.2 Fire Protection System remain incomplete,. compensatory measures will be maintained to assure a continued, adequate level of fire safety. These compensatory measures include both roving, hourly and continuous, stationary fire watches, as required by Braidwood Station Administrative Procedures.

We plan to devote substantial manpower resources and management attention to facilitate the timely completion of these remaining fire protection items. Moreover, we intend to invoke a strict work control process for these activities to assure that this work has a minimal inpact on plant operations. Additionally, we intend to provide to you a monthly status that updates the completion of this work.

This is being submitted for NRC review, please direct'any questions regarding these matters to this office.

Very truly yours, 1
