SUMMARY

I contacted Mr. Abrams to inquire about the status of (1) the assessment of groundwater contamination in the floodplain sediments and (2) verification of rock riprap placement at the Shiprock UMTRAP site. Mr. Abrams informed me that we should expect to receive the groundwater assessment by Novanber 13, 1987. With respect to riprap placement, Mr. Abrams stated that DOE is following up on the obser/ations made by NRC staff (TJohnson and RJStarmer) with the following actions: (1) verification of riprap placement by the RAC (out on site on 11/3/87) and (2) develognent of a plan for issue resolution.

Mr. Abrams stated that he needs NRC's trip report to prepare the plan for resolution of the issue. Mr. Abrams also stated that preliminary results of a RAC survey of the di,ssipation area of the pile with 42 pits indicate the following:

(1) thinnest rock layer = 9.5"L(2_) thickest layer = 14";_ (3) average thickness = 10.5 to 11"; and a _ _

construction specification of 12" +/- 1.2". I cmmented that the average thickness ._ _

appears to fall at p[_just outside of the construction specification. DOE would 1ike .

to meet to discuss the verification / resolution plan after they have received NRC's trip report. I thanked him for the information and terminated the conversation.
