'o The Members of The-NRC Commissions i

! thank you and Asprecuntativw Michael Forbes for allowing the voice of the people who livw on the eastern and of Long Island, NY to be given tte opportunity to publicly comment on the opening of the Millstone Nucisar Reactor 3 in Millstone, Connecticut, which is 1ccated slightly more than 10 miles away from us.

I am unable to attend tne mueting scheduloJ for May 26th in Jamesport, so I have decided to writo end express my twelings regarding this most wurious at dtycisions.

As you know, it was determined that duo to.the inf casibility to sofely evacuate Long 1 stand residents in the event of a nucicar accident at the Shorcham Nuclear Power Plant, the plant was shut down and decommissioned.

The voice of the 3+

million people who live on Long Island said, "NO'"

to this plant and they were heard.

The Millstonw Nuclear Power Station is as close or closwr to us 'than thw Shorpham Nuclear Power Plant.

Millstone 3 was shut down in 1996 cum to operational sofwty prob 1 cms. Millstone i was closed.in 1995 wbun one of its emergwncy cooling systems was declared unab1w to operate safwly.

Millstone 2 was closed in 1996 due to s#futy cercerns for the public at large.

Based on past history involving the nuclear in dus,t ry,

f acilition havw not operated saf uly by both the utility companiws who own thom, nor by year agency who is ultimately responsihte for scnitoring theno facilities.

It is common kno-ledge that nuclear f acilitime periodically emit radioactive materials into the air. water, and soil.

To believe that we the people think this is accept'able is inccrrect.

The radioactive plume tnat is presently spreading from a so called monitored government reactor, the BNL, has recently shown that sediment in the Peconic Rivwr is contaminated, as is the ground water, soil, and the ani'mals that live in and around that nuclear facility.

It would be Doth naive and ignorant to dismiss the serious health hazards incurrwd from the emissions of these nuclear facilities.

l Cancer ratou are soaring.

We on the East End'of Long Island are presently conducting investigations into thu reasons for the unusually high incidence of unusual cancers in our children and our adults.
