REQUEST FOR INFORMATION FROM LICENSEE In the matter of thimble tube wear as experienced by Westinghouse pressurized water reactors, we request that you request the licensee of North Anna (either unit) to provide a duplicate flux map to this office the next time that they do a flux map. We intend to examine this map and compare it to a flux map from a foreign reactor to see if anomalies in the trace can be seen which could be attributable to vibr; tion of the probe or thimble tube.
A similar problem with flow-induced vibration occurred about ten years ago in BWRs and anomalies in the traces were used to determine that the problem existed. There are differences in the PWR design and problem, we know - but there are also similarities.
It is possible that trace anomalies are a similarity. We request the flux map to determine this.
