NUCLEAR. REGULATORY COMMISSION Washington, D.C.;20555 Gentlemen:
. DOCKETS'50-266'and 50-301 EXTENSION OF. DECEMBER 1, 1987, DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING AN IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE UNDER GENERIC LETTER 87-02
-POINT-BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 and 2
- n.
NRC Generic Letter 87-02 dated February 19, 1987, " Verification of Seismic. Adequacy of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Operating Reactors, Unresolved Safety Issue (USI)-A-46,"
requested that Wisconsin Electric provide within sixty days of receipt of the letter a schedule for implementation of a seismic verification program at Point Buach.
. isconsin Electric is a W
member of'the Seismic Qualification Utility Group (SQUG) which
.has been working closely with the NRC Staff to develop a reasonable-methodology.for resolution of USI A-46.
Attached to Mr.~ David H.
Wagner's; letter to C.
W.
Fay of Wisconsin Electric dated May 4,'1987 was Dr. Thomas E. Murley's April 28, 1987, letter:to Neil Smith,. Chairman of the SQUG.
In this letter Dr.
Murley stated that each utility participating in the SQUG
-program should submit a plant-specific implementation schedule no later than December 1, 1987.
That date was premised on the assumption that the NRC would have completed its review of the generic procedures by October 1, 1987.
Considerable progress has been made since April in finalizing a generic procedure for resolution of all USI A-46 issues.
These issues include development of appropriate seismic verification criteria.for heat exchangers, tanks, cable trays, and conduit.
This. progress has been summarized in a SQUG submittal to Dr.
Murley dated October 9, 1987.
A schedule was appended to that letter which' indicates, based on a sustained effort by both NRC and SQUG, that final. NRC approval of the complete SQUG Generic Implementation Procedure (GIP) is likely to occur in early 1989.
. Sixty days after NRC approval of the GIP, utilities would submit plant-specific schedules to the NRC.
