jd UNITED STATES O* NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

% ,,,,, # July 9, 1998 CHAIRMAN The Honorable Joseph M. McDade, Chairman Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development Committee on Appropriations United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

The House Appropriations Committee report on Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) funding raises a number of important issues regarding agency operations and activities. In a number of respects the House Committee report highlights issues similar to those in the Senate Appropriations Committee Report. We at the NRC are taking the analysis and recommendations contained in the reports very seriously. In that connection, the Commission is planning to hold a public meeting on July 17,1998, during which the various stakeholder in nuclear regulation may present their views in an open forum here at our headquarters in Rockville. Of course, you or your staff are most welcome to either attend or make a presentation if that is your desire.

In this regard, I am asking if we may receive any reports or other information which you believe that the NRC staff should be considering in its comprehensive review of various documents and information. At the conclusion of the NRC staffs analyses and following our open forum with stakeholder, I expect that the Commission will be in a position to take additional steps in the direction ofimplementing any needed reform of the NRC.

l I

l would like to schedule a meeting with you sometime in September, following the August Congressional recess, in order to personally give you a report on the status of our efforts.

Sincerely, l 1

Shirley Ann Jackson cc: Representative Victor Fazio I
