Here is the information you requested from the Materials Safety Branch, based on your facsimile dated July 3,1998, concoming Gaseous Tritium Light Devices (GLTDs).
The NRC makes distinctions conceming GTLDs, depending mainly on activity and associated
. risk.. Enclosed is a copy of NUREG-1556, Vol 3, providing information on products acceptability.
Please refer to section 4.1, page 4-2, for informa' ion pertaining to self-luminous products, such ys luminous timepieces, indicators, or gun sights.- These products contain millicurie amounts of tritium gas in glass vials and are licensed pursuant of 10 CFR 30.19, for use by persons exempt from licensing requirements. Similarly, refer to section 4.4, page 4-5, for information pertaining to luminous safety devices such as exit signs. These products contain up to 20 cuires of tritium

gas and are generally licensed pursuant of 10 CFR 32.51. I have enclosed portions of the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) which are referenced in these sections for you convenience.
In regards to tritium properties, the NRC does not possess extensive information concerning radioisotopes. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published a Primer on Tritium Safe Handlina Practices (DOE-HDBK-1079-94). providing an abundance of general and technical information on tritium.
