STAFF REQUIREMENTS - SECY-98-131 - STATUS OF THE INTEGRATION PLAN FOR CLOSURE OF SEVERE ACCIDENT ISSUES AND THE STATUS OF SEVERE ACCIDENT RESEARCH This is to advise you that the Commission has not objected to the staff's proposed approach to keep the Commission informed of progress on the closure of severe accident issues and the status of severe accident research. The staff should ensure that the appropriate level of detail in' accident management is included in the status update of the PRA implementation Plan. The staff should provide the Commission a schedule for bringing closure to the remaining severe accident issues, including each severe accident research activity.

The staff plans to discuss the generic issue of how it intends to deal with voluntary industry initiatives in lieu of regulatory requirements at the upcoming stakeholder' meeting on DSI 13, the role of industry. It may be useful to use particular cases, such as severe accident management, to facilitate the discussion of the broader issues.
