Ionization Smoke Detector DESCRIPTION:
The 305 Series are round, single. station smoke detectors and consist of two models: the "A" chamber which is a low wall housing for duct detectors, and the "B"
chamber which is a high wall = housing for area detectors.
These models are sold under various brand names which may have different plastic housings.
All 305 Series models contain one source with nominal activity of 0.55 microcurie (20.35 MBq).
EST usy market the models in this series under different brand names.
However, in all cases, the smoke detector design will not change and the label will reference EST's license number.
i The'235 Series are round, sing]c station smoke detectors.
The i-on chamber in the 235 Series may contain any activity up to 1.1 microcurie (4 0. 7 MBq).
The models in this series differ'only in_the activity in the ion chamber.
EST may market the models in this series under different brand names.
However, in all cases, the smoke detector design will not change and the label will i

The above referenced amendment request asked, in part, for a change in the company name from "G.S.
Building Systems Corp." to "EST', and this request has indeed been acted upon for the Device Registration as

per your letter of 4/17/98. The request was predicated on the fact that in early 1997, the name on the company letterhead was changed to "EST." I assumed this indicated a change in the legal identity of the company. I am now informed that this is, in fact, not the case. The legalidentity of the company remains "G.S. Building Systems Corp.", which remains an operating unit of General Signal Corporation. The "EST' name is basically at this time just a brand identity for customer recognition.
With this now clarified, it appears I was in error in requesting the name change on the license amendment request dated 6/27/97. It has been suggested that the Device Registration should show "G.S. Building Systems Corp. operating as EST (Edwards Systems Technology)" as the " Distributor / Manufacturer" of record. Please comment on this and advise as to whether an additional formal amendment request will have to filed, or perhaps, a more abbreviated (and less costly) change mechanism might be employed.
I Please note that Mr. Kirkwood of the NRC has been informed of this matter in regards to the amendment request for the distribution license itself.
