Calibration Device DESCRIPTION:

A Model D-0062 calibration device is used to calibrate gamma and beta / gamma radiation detectors and consists of the following parts:

-Radioactive sealed source j

-The shielded container

-Padlock

-Shield plug

-Weatherproof cover Fully assembled, the device weights approximately 55 pounds (24.95 kg).

The device's shielded container is an 8" (20.32 cm) long cylinder with a 6" (15.24 cm) diameter.

The container is made of lead j

encased in steel and has steel square plates at each end.

The square plates enable the device to be placed on its side.

The container has a 1-1/2" (3.81 cm) diameter cylindrical stainless steel lined source-well which is deep enough to allow the source to be located at the center of the container.

The radioactive sealed source is screwed to the bottom of the source-well.

At the end of the device, covering the source-well, is a stainless steel clad lead well plug.

The well plug is attached to the device by a steel mounting plate which is attached to studs in the end plate.

Three of the studs are threaded (to receive nuts) and the fourth is equipped to receive a padlock to lock the device closed.

A weatherproof cover is attached to the handle of the well plug with locknuts to cover the well plug and protect the padlock and nuts.

Calibration Device DESCRIPTION (Cont'd)-

The device is operated by removing the well plug and exposing the sealed source to the detector to be calibrated.

The detector can then be calibrated knowing the activity of the source and the distance to the detector.

DIAGRAM:

A section view of the Model D-0062 is shown in attachment 1.

1 LABELING:

The device is labeled in accordance with Section 20.1901, 10 CFR Part 20.

The label containr, the radiation symbol, isotope, activity, model number, serial number, calibration date, intensity in mrem /hr at the time of calibration, and the words

" CAUTION-RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL".

The above information is inscribed in an aluminum label and the label is screwed to the device.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

The Model D-0062 is for calibration of gamma and beta / gamma radiation detection instruments.

The device is only used in laboratory type environments which are suitable for humans.

The device is restricted to use in environments specified suitable for the sealed source.

' PROTOTYPE TESTING:

f

The D-0062 has been in use by the Department of the Air Force for over 30 years with no incidents of accidental exposure or leakage due to, malfunctioning of the device.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Measurements performed on D-0062's currently in use yield radiation exposure rar.es at one (1) foot (30.48 cm) of 0.4 to 0.6 mrem /hr (4 to 6 pSv)' for activities of 92 to 97 millicuries (3.404 to 3.589 GBq).

by extrapolation, the exposure rate at one (1) foot (30.48 cm) for activities of 150 millicuries (5.55 GBq) will be 0.8 mrem /hr (8 pSv).

OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

4 i

The'D-0062 has been previously licensed in 1959 by NRC for use by l

the Department offthe Air Force.

The device was built under contract to the Department of the Air Force and conforms to l

military specifications.

Since that time, no incidents of L

malfunction of the device have occurred.

l LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • The device shall only be distributed to:

Department of Defense and it's Contractors Any place in the United States

determined by the licensing authority.

  • These devices shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 kBq) of removable contamination.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: The license reviewer should request procedures from the licensee as necessary to comply with the survey and posting requirements of 10 CFR Part 20.
  • This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

The device is locked in a closed position and only emits a maximum 0.8 mrem /hr (8 pSv) at one (1) foot (30.48 cm) from the device when in this position.

The device will only be operated in the open position by an individual authorized by NRC.

Based on review of calibration device, Model D-0062, and the

)

information cited below, we continue to conclude that this device is acceptable for specific licensing purposes.
