a July 18,1998 Mr. James W. Davis Director, Operations Department Nuclear Generation Division Nuclear Energy Institute 1776 Eye Street, NW, Suite 400 Washington, DC 20006-3708

Dear Mr. Davis:

SUBJECT:

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS TASK FORCE MEETINGS WITH NRC In your letter of July 6,1998, you requested a meeting of the Technical Specifications Task Force (TSTF) with the NRC staff on August 25,1998, to discuss issues related to proposed changes to improved Standard Technical Specifications (STS).

l As we have discussed with you and the TSTF, during various meetings and on the telephone, i

the NRC staff is responding in accordance with mutual priorities to a spectrum of industry l

technical specifications related requests. Among these are conversions to improved STS, risk-l informed technical specifications improvements, as well as proposed revisions to the improved STS. As we have also discussed, the staff is working to support a meeting with the TSTF toward the latter part of September 1998. Because of the balance of priorities and staff availability, we feel that the original target will facilitate a more productive meeting. Accordingly, we request that you propose one day during the week of either September 21,1998, or September 28,1998, for the meeting.

i Because the staff shares the feeling of importance in maintaining the improved STS as living documents, it is our intention to support subsequent, semi-annual meetings with the TSTF.

This letter documents our telephone response on July 15,1998, to your July 6,1998, letter mentioned above.

Sincerely, Original Signed By William D. Becker, Chief Technical Specifications Branch Associate Director for Projects, NRR I
