By our Letter Number GN-1368 dated May 22, 1987, Georgia Power Company (GPC) requested that 30 Unit 2 structure settlement markers be relocated to improve accessibility and thus reduce surveying costs.
He now propose that 52 Unit 1 markers and 14 additional Unit 2 markers, listed in the enclosed table, be relocated for the same reason.
As was noted in the referenced letter, the markers will be moved to the exteriors of structures or to higher elevations within structures.
Their plan view location will continue to -essentially be the same as shown on drawing AX2055V001, which was transmitted in Appendix A of the referenced letter.
These changes will nct compromise the settlement monitoring program because the new settlement readings will be correlated with the original settlement readings to provide continuous settlement data at the original locations.
It should be noted that marker number 235, which is located in the auxiliary building, was moved 27 feet north when Unit 1 began operations because it would have become inaccessible due to the high radiation level in the original location.
i In addition to the above, we propose to discontinue readings on two markers in the Unit 1 side of the turbine building:
markers number 308 and 310.
These markers were installed at the time of the erosion in the backfill caused by heavy rains in 1979 (reference Final Report on Dawatering and Repair of Erosion in Category 1 Backfill in Power Block Area, August 15, 1980).
These markers are not shown on the drawings since other markers subsequently placed in the same general area provide the required data.
Settlement at markers 308 and 310 has essentially leveled off.
