SUBJECT:

CUSHING SITE - ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED REMEDIATION OF ACID SLUDGE PIT 4 AND LIQUID EFFLUENT RELEASES FROM EITHER THE RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL STORAGE AREA OR THE RETENTION POND The Kerr-McGee Corporation in its November 26,1997, letter, and supplemented by letters dated February 5 and March 3,1998, requested authorization to remediation of Acid Sludge Pit 4 located on its Cushing refinery site. The Kerr-McGee Corporation is obligated to remediate Pit 4 by both NRC Regulations and an Oklahoma State Consent Order. Further, t#

Kerr-McGee in its letter dated February 10,1998, and supplemented by letter dated May 1, 1998, requested authorization to place radioactive contaminated material into the radioactive material storage area (RMSA).

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has completed its assessment of the environmental impacts associated with Kerr-McGee's requests. ! have enclosed a copy of this assessment for the docket file.
