UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 1 7,, E WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 M7 W k..... I Docket No. 99900296 I

MEMORANDUM FOR: Ellis W. Merschoff, Acting Chief l Vendor Inspection Branch i Division of Reactor Inspection and Safeguards y FROM: Joseph J. Petrosino I Vendor Inspection Branch Division of Reactor Inspection and Safeguards

SUBJECT:

AGASTAT RELAY VENDOR MEETING TIME / PLACE: August 11, 1987, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. 1 East West / West Tower {

Third Floor Conference Room Representatives from the Amerace Corporation of New Jersey were invited and have agreed to give the NRC staff a presentation concerning the differences between its Agastat nuclear and commercial grade relay. I have requested that the presentation be limited to specific technical differences in the Amerace design, design control, procurement, receipt inspection, assembly, and testing. The purpose of the meeting is to provide the staff with information necessary to determine whether commercial grade relays manufactured by Amerace can be dedicated for use in safety-related applications and if so, what actions are necessary to correctly perform the dedication.

The Amerace Corporation manufactures and markets two distinct styles of electrical relays. One is a electropneumatic timing device (7000 series), and the other is a electromagnetic moving core device (control relays series). Both of ,

the Agastat relay series lines are available as commercial grade or as nuclear grade. The nuclear grade relays are readily identifiable by an "E" prefix in the model number (i.e., E7021 and EGP-XXX). I have vendor technical information literature if anyone is interested. -
