WM-82 LTR BIO TESTS 4 1

Dr. Gary Klecka.

The Dow Chemical Company Environmental Science Research 1701 Building Midland, MI 48674

Dear Dr. Klecka:

In confirmation of our telephone discussion today, it is our-understanding that an additional round of tests will be performed at the Dow Chemical Company'to resolve remaining questions about the resistance of the waste forms produced by-the Dow Solidification Process for low-level waste to biological' attack.

The test plan agreed upon requires preparation of 13 waste forms similar to 3

those previously tested and reported on in the Topical Report on the Dow j

waste form. All tests will be done in triplicate. The fir t measurement will q

be determination of the compressive strength of the freshly prepared waste form. Nine of the remaining specimens will be subjected to heating in a vacuum oven at 60 C for five days. The purpose is to drive off any mcbile unreacted constituents. At this time, no attempt will be made to capture the effluent for analysis. Three of specimens treated in this manner will be. checked for compressive strength.

L j

The six treated specimens will be divided into two groups of three cach.

Each specimen will be placed in separate flasks of nutrient salts solution (NSS) as per ASTM G21 and G22. One set of three will be inoculated with fungi and.the other set will be inoculated with bacteria. The six untreated specimens will

)

be tested similarly. All twelve specimens will be checked for compressive strength after incubation.

Four controls will be used. One flask will contain NSS and bacteria. A second will contain NSS and fungi. Neither of these should.show growth after i

incubation for the specifieo period of time. The third control will contain NSS, bacteria, and peptone as a carbon source. The fourth will contain NSS, fungi, and filter paper as a carbon source. These two controls should both show growth after incubation.

The expectation'is that the treated specimens will show no growth after i

incubation and essentially no change in compressive strength. The untreated l

specimens, may or may not show growth. With these results, the Dow waste forms may be considered to have passed the biodegradation tests.

WM-82 LTR BIO TESTS obtained on the treated forms, it may be necessary to perform. tests such as a I

modified Bartha-Pramer tests to estimate the rate of attack as a function of i

time. Discussion of such tests was deferred pending results of the above test -

plan.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me on 427-4546.
