50-328 SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT - TVA/NRC COMMISSION MEETING OF MARCH 16, 1987, AND TVA/NRC STAFF MEETING OF MAY 21, 1987 In the course of the March lo, 1987 meeting (as documented on pagt. 59 of the l
. meeting transcript), H. L. Abercrombie, Site Director, Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, made the following( statement in regard to containment coatings.
h Containment coatings. We found that we did not really have in I
place a good program to maintain the coatings on components and structures inside containment. We reworked that program, and now we'have assurance that those coatings are capable of withstanding the design basis event.
There are no technical
' issues there.
In the course of the May 21, 1987 meeting (as documented on page 126 of the meeting transcript), R. H.. Bryan, Staff Specialist, made'the following 7-
. statement in regard to containment coatings.
One final issue that we had to address on this was for main steamline breaks. We are evaluating the potential for coatings j
.that are not qualified to these temperatures to fail and I
potentially block our emergency sump. This would render our spray system inoperative and remove that method of active heat i
removal.
In order to update you and eliminate any potential confusion, Mr. Abercrombie has asked:that the matter of containment coatings be brought to your attention and clarified.
TVA is currently reviewing whether coatings within containment could fail and is evaluating the consequences of those failures. TVA's Condition Adverse to
~ Quality Program is tracking the evaluation of these developments and will
{
ensure timely resolution. We will keep you informed of further developments.
