RESEARCH EFFORTS AT ttAXEY FLATS As pr.r request by E.0. Donnell of your staff we have reviewed the document titled, " Initial Research Observations at Maxey Flats" dated January 14, 1983 which is relevant to site closure. At the meeting in Reston, VA, November 30-December 1, 1982, it was our understanding that the report would address environmental monitoring procedures for the site. Additionally, minority opinions were to be included in the report. Neither seems to be done.

Based on current circumstances, when the final. report is issued to the State of Kentucky (scheduled for completion-in November 1983) we plan on terminating our support of RES's research program at Maxey Flats.

It is-our understanding that the Low-Level Waste Branch in HMSS has committed to supporting any further necessary research projects for specific site closure plans at fiaxey Flats, (Ross Scarano committed this support during the meeting at Natural Bridges, Kentucky on October 27,1982).

We would be prepared to handle any requests'for technical assistance for the State, as is our normal practice with all Agreement States.

Because of our relationship with the KDHR (The State Regulatory Agency) we want to be kept informed of research work at Maxey Flats and participate in any future meetings. Mr. Kendig of my staff will remain the cognizant individual.
