REVIEW OF MAYBELL, COLORADO, PROJECT INTERFACE DOCUMENT l

Dear Mr. Rael:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has completed its review of the Maybell, Colorado, Project interface Document (PID) No.14-S-15, dated April 9,1998, which was submitted by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) letter dated May 6,1998. The DOE transmittal letter states that the PID is a Class I change and, thus, requires evaluation and concurrence by the NRC staff.

PID 14-S-15 eliminates the requirement for placement of bentonite amended radon barrier material on a small portion (approximately 0.5 acre) on the east sideslope of the Maybell disposal cell, which has a total footprint of approximately 70 acres. Appendix A to the PID is a calculation which indicates that the radon exit flux for the 0.5 acre area will be less than 20 pCi/m2-sec.

The NRC staff has determined that DOE's estimate of the radon flux is reasonable, and the elimination of the bentonite amended radon barrier over the small area of the disposal cell is acceptable. Therefore, the staff concurs with PID No.14-S-15.

1 If you t. ave any questions concerning this letter, please contact the NRC Project Manager, Robert Carlson, at (301) 415-6678, or Ken Hooks, at (301) 415-7777.
