PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PNO-77-23 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

, RELEASE OF PLUTONIUM CONTAMINATION TO RESTRICTED AREA -
7:45 P. M., FEBRUARY 4, 1977 While changing a 4 by 4 foot panel on a glovebox in the Fab 1 area
.of the Plutonium Facility, a spread of airborne, plutonium contamination from the glovebox into the room occurred. The contamination escaned hath tents used for contamination control. An air sample in the room indicated airborne plutonium concentration of approximately 1200 MFC-hrs when averaged over 24 hrs - an individual is allowed to be exposed to 520 MPC-hrs of an airborne contaminant during a calendar quarter. All personnel in the room l
or in the tents were protected by either supplied air or full. face mask respirators. Based on available air sampling, after protection factors E3 for masks were used, five people were exposed from 61-122 MPC-hrs; these
, concentrations are less than 25% of'the limits allowed by the Regulations.
There was no release of radioactivity to the unrestricted area or other parts of the facility.
Media interest is not expected but is possible. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed. A press release is not planned.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Mr. J. S. Dziewisz on February 5, 1977.
