' United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region.I Mr. L. Cheung 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406
SUBJECT:
Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Environmental Qualification Inspection NOS 50-277-87-18 and 50-278-87-18
REFERENCE:
Letter from R. J. Lees to C. Anderson dated 7-7-87
Dear Mr. Cheung:
During the 6-19-87 exit meeting for the subject environmental qualification inspection, two potential violations were identified.
. They concerned the qualification of wire crimp connectors in dual voltage _ ' motors on Limitorque operators and the qualification of magnesium rotors in motors on Limitorque operators.
The Reference letter provided supplemental information to that available during the inspection.
On July 14, 1987 you verbally requested ~ additional information on the use of insulated blind barrel crimp connectors on MOV's in primary and secondary containment and identification of the installed connectors to support similarity to tested connectors.
This letter transmits information on the use of the connectors in primary and secondary containment.
Our submittal of 7-7-87 contains an analysis - for supporting similarity of the tested connectors to the installed connectors.
Specific identification of the manufacturer of these connectors is not easily accomplished in that it requires field inspections and removal in some cases with positive identification not always possible.
However, we believe that a review of the operability requirements for the Limitorque operators is equally significant in determining the acceptability of the wire crimp connectors and have revised the previous analysis in this vein.
While it is our position that these operators are environmentally qualified, we are planning to inspect all Q-listed actuators as part of a future modification and replace any wire connectors in dual voltage motors. This action is being taken in response to your concern.
