Mr. A. Bert Davis Regional Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission bD Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137

Subject:

Braidwood Station Unit 1 Interim Operation of VA System NRC Docket No. 50-456

Reference:

(a) June 11, 1987 S. C. Hunsader letter to T. E. Murley

Dear Mr. Davis:

Reference (a) provided Braidwood Procedure BWVP 200-1077, Revision 0 the method of leak testing potentially radioactive systems outside of containment and obtaining an accumulated total leakage.

The purpose of this letter is to provide an explanation of how Braidwood will implement this Leakage Monitoring Program. The following actions will be taken; a)

Prior to exceeding 20% Rated Thermal Power (RTP), Braidwood will establish a baseline leakage rate for ECCS subsystems in accordance with procedure BWP 200-1077.

b)

Braidwood will stagger its ASME pump surveillance and the coincident execution of BWP 200-1077 throughout the requisite quarterly interval. This will result in a different ECCS train having its leakage quantified at approximately 2-3 week intervals.

This leakage will be used to calculate an updated overall leakage value.

c)

While Unit 1 is above 20%,RTP, the accessible ECCS components susceptible to leakage (valve packings, pump seals, etc.) which are located outside containment will be monitored on a monthly basis.

This will be a qualitative assessment for the purpose of detecting gross variances in previously quantified leakage rates.
