Current inspection Schedule We are currently slated to inspect at Palisades during the week of 4/20/98. The scope will be to review one automated UT method -probably " time of flight" - and the manual method for sizing. The week tentatively looks like this:
Susan Shankman, Mting SFPO Deputy Director may join us on part of this inspection.
Monday-Travel Tue - am - entrance meeting and technical discussion pm - procedure review and team meeting [ Steve D to arrive late) i i
Wed - am - UT automated demo pm - data review, VCC demo and team meeting Thur-am manual demo and data review pm - follow-up and team meeting Fri - am - Exit meeting pm - travel CC:

Revised Transducer for ANO P-Scan system On 40/98, we spoke with ANO/ Palisades / Point Beach.
I We asked about the replacement transducer to be used for 0 degree P-scans. ANO (Ken Panther) said the new transducer will be a Panametrics model number V611, 0.5" element,10 MHz, with a 1 1/2" Lucite standoff.. He also said the last transducer (VI11) failed because the 10 MHz crystal was so thin; there was no wear face, and the scanning scrubbed off the face of the transducer.
ANO is still looking at other probes not there yet.
On 4S/98, I spoke with Jim Sheedy, technical representative from Panametrics.
I gave him a brief description of our scanning setup (200'F steel surface, continuous scanning, I j
hour duration) and asked for his recommendations. He said the previously used standard contact I
transducer (VI11) was defmitely not the way to go. Because of the construction, failure / disbonding of the epoxy which attaches the very thin element would occur at these temperatures.
He suggested the high temperature delay line transducer (rated up to 900*F intermittent contact; recommended use cycle is 10 seconds maaimum contact followed by 1 minute of air cooling). The delay line acts as a buffer for the heat, however, there will be more attenuation and the frequency will downshift from 10 MHz. He said the new transducer /de'.ay line combination might not work; the customer would have to test this. As per cetalog recommendations, the transducer wear face should not he h:r.ted above 140'F. His best
~
suggestion: cool the transducer.
4/9/98 I asked our thermal reviewer to do a qubk calculation to see how quickly the transducer would i
get to 140*F with a 1 1/2 inch Lucite delay line connected to the 200'F surface (couplant neglected).
