certification for'their' Advanced Boiling Water. Reactor (ABWR) in accordance
^with 10 CFR 50 Appendix 0 and the Commissions recently issued Standardization

[Because of this joint design effort, which has been' essentially complete-since 1985, special; attentionLto the Appendix B design QA requirements is warranted; I
.especially for'those-portions of the'ABWR designed by Toshiba and Hitachi, o

' Therefore. I am directing the staff to perform an audit of the GE 1
ABWR design process in February.1988. The Associate Director for Projects.has been assigned the' lead responsibility for establishing and coordinating the GE l
QA audit.- It is anticipated that the audit' will be a concentrated effort by a interdisciplinary ' team of-approximately 6-10 experienced staff people over a 8-10' day period. The audit should be' preceded by an initial visit by 2-3 experienced personnel in' January 1988 to identify areas of importance on which
