PACKAGES CONTAINING RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL 1.

Shipping Radioactive Material-All shipments will comply with Department of Transportation regulations governing the transport of radioactive materials.

A.

Packaging (1) Model No. 6717-B Container (2) Description Radioactive device within a protective overpack. The overpack.

consists of an outer container which is a 10 gallon open head steel drum having a minimum 20 gauge body and cover, welded seams, and a clamp-ring type head closure.

The void space between the j

inner and outer container is filled with 1.5" thick molded asbes-tos-free liner on sides, top and bottom, plus molded polyurethrane filler, to position and secure the radioactive device within the drum.

Iridium-192 sealed cources which meet the requirements of Special Form Radioactive Material must be secured and in a single snug-fit-ting inner radiographic device which has a metal outer wall and meets the requirements of DOT Specification 7A packaging.

(2) The source shall not exceed 200 curies and shall be secured in the i

shielded position of the radiographic device by the shipping plug, source assembly, and locking device. The shipping plug and source assembly used must be made of materials capable of resisting a 14750 F fire environment for one-half hour and maintaining their positioning function. The ball stop of the source assembly must l

engage the locking device.

The flexible cable of the source assem-bly and shipping plug must be of sufficient length and diameter to provide positive positioning of the source in the shielded position.

Labelling of Shipping Container-Ebrvey the container at the surface and at one meter.

Label the container following the criteria listed below:

(1) Address label (2) Diamond-Shaped Yellow III, Yellow II, or White I labels on oppo-l site sides of the container a.

White I labels indicate a surface radiation level not exceed-ing.5 MREM /Hr.

Yellow II labels indicate a maximum of 50 MREM /Hr on any sur-face of the container and a Transport Index of (1) one or less,

i. e., a survey meter reading of less than 1.0 MREM at one meter from any surface of the container.

Responsibilities l

H&G Inspection's Radiation Safety Officer shall be responsible for the status and adequacy of the Quality Assurance Program.

H&G Inspection's Radiation Safety Officer or Assistant Radiation Safety Officer shall be responsible for shipping of radioactive materials and must assure that all shipments meet the requirements of this program.

H&G Inspection's Radiation Safety Officer shall review the scatus and adequacy of this program on an annual basis.
