Dear Chuck:
As you may be aware, EG6G in conjunction with the Energy Research a H Development Administration Aerial Radiological Measuring System (AR ?.3) f' Program provides aerial measurement support for NRC licensed facilic.ies.
The basic objective of the ARMS program is to provide maintenance of a 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
a day response to a Radiological Assistance Program (RAF) or nuclear accident call. In this respect, baseline ARMS surveys are made for certain NRC licensed facilities and the data are reduced and stored for potential use as accident assessment tools. Official reports of. background radiation profiles around these licensee sites, including l
limited soil sampling and " analysis, are prepared. For a selected number of sites, including waste burial facilities, helicopter surveys will be j
flown to significantly enhance. the sensitivity and area detail for possible manmade isotopes.
In addition, large scale aerial photographs of all licensee sites are taken.
ERDA has informed us that EG&G has scheduled ARMS helicopter surveys l
at the Paducah, Kentucky Diffusion Plant and Portsmouth, Ohio Diffusion i
Plant this spring.
Since the survey team will be operating in the vicinity of the NECO burial site at Maxey Flats, we felt it would be advantageous to have the ARMS team survey the area of the site (2 miles x 2 miles).
If you have no objection, we will ask them to include this curvey. There will be no cost to' Kentucky.
/
l-ARMS staff will be in contact with your office to discuss schedule details and to coordinate any press releases.
Copies of the aerial photographs and any reports resulting from this survey will, of course, be sent to you as soon as they are available.
If you have any que.stions about ARMS or the manner in which the surveys will be conducted at Maxey Flats, please call me at 301/492-7413.
